Publications A recent essay in POAR magazine in Korea on "Sustainability and Minimalism," introducing a new definition of "minimal" to include the idea of minimal impact, as well as an aesthetic style. What influenced you to take a "green" approach to design?I spent my formative years in Korea and also worked in Japan, so my experience of Western culture is relatively new. As I started living in the U.S. and experiencing Western culture firsthand, I realized something that I had taken for granted: how effective the integration between everyday life and nature is in the East. Being from a country where natural resources are very limited, sustainability issues have a very direct effect on everyday life. When resources are plentiful, however, people sometimes take nature for granted. I'm happy to see increasing interest and support for sustainability issues, and an openness to implementing and experimenting with creative solutions. Which architects and designers inspire you?I look for a seamless convergence between sustainability and aesthetics. To be honest, I haven't found very many good examples. However, I find the work of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa to be very inspiring. I worked for them in Tokyo, and they design compelling spaces. What resources do you find useful?El Croquis; A+U; The Boston Society of Architects events and lectures. |
